Subject Matter
The selection of subject matter for this Curriculum Web is based on the desire for each student to view their plans for the first 5 years after high school from a new perspective. They have possibly received advice from friends, parents, and others about what kind of career they should select. This advice may or may not be based on the student's interests, their skills, or their ability to find a job in the career area being recommended.
The steps in the Curriculum Web's investigation are an attempt to encourage students to put their interests and skills into perspective when selecting a major in college. Some of the resources listed were included to encourage students to consider whether the major they have chosen is preparing them for an occupation where jobs will be available when they graduate.
The inquiry the students will initiate is intended to be one that allows them to work at their own pace to evaluate the relative earning potential of various careers and compare that to their interests and the satisfaction they expect to receive from their career.
One of the objectives leads the student to evaluate their potential for assuming the role of a person who works from home, is a freelance or contract worker, or is the owner of a small business. Each of these areas of exploration permits the student to relate the type of work they believe they want with the potential for an occupation that has become more feasible as technology advances.
